The mission of this Special Interest Group (SIG) is to facilitate and promote the development and exchange of knowledge within all areas of International Management within and beyond the academic community. In line with the European Academy of Management’s (EURAM) mission this SIG aims to be an open, international and multicultural European forum for networking and research (theoretical, empirical and methodological ) related to International Management with a particular (but not exclusive) regional focus on Europe regarding (a) the SIG community and (b) the geographical scope of empirical or conceptual research.

GT07_00 International Management General Track

International Management is an ubiquitous phenomenon in today’s business world. The general track of our SIG is interested in research addressing the challenges organisations face in an increasingly internationalised environment. We invite research on ALL subfields of International Management and International Business and we encourage multi-disciplinary studies fostering cross-pollination with other fields. We are open to conceptual work and empirical studies advancing existing research as well as fresh perspectives on IM. For the 2019 conference in Lisbon, we explicitly invite research linking our SIG's scope on internationalisation with SMEs, competitiveness and recent challenges including regional disruptions, digitalisation and AI.

INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT SIG STANDING TRACKS

ST07_01 Expatriate Management

The topic of Expatriate Management (EM) typically involves international mobility for work purposes by skilled workers or professionals. The core of this topic includes internationally assigned business expatriates as well as alternative forms of international work where the movement of people across national borders is becoming increasingly common. Therefore, EM research also examines, for example, self-initiated expatriates including mid- and low-status workers, international business travellers and commuters, global talent management, duty of care, global families, and expatriate entrepreneurs. Emerald Group Publishing and Journal of Global Mobility have instituted an annual JGM Best Paper Award for EM papers at EURAM Conferences.

T07_03 - Cultures and management

This topic aims at exploring the complex role of cultures in organizations. It deals with cultural interactions at the interpersonal level or through the transfer of management practices across countries. It welcomes any research which adopts interactional and interpretative perspectives, as qualitative case studies, in order to account for the intricate intermingling of cultures and other dimensions in international management contexts. The topic will, among others, focus on exploring the particular cultural challenges and potentials that emanate from the arrival and integration of all kinds of migrant workers. It also welcomes papers adressing methodological issues in intercultural management.

T07_04 - Emerging Market Studies

We call for papers on emerging market studies from management, marketing, and strategy perspectives. Submissions shall focus on related issues of firm internationalisation and foreign direct investment (FDI) to and from emerging markets. Papers shall mainly respond to three research questions:

  1. What have multinational firms learned from their FDI in emerging markets?
  2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of FDI from emerging markets?
  3. How does FDI to and from emerging markets succeed and sustain?

We welcome papers from a broad geographical context: Africa, BRICs, Latin America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, other emerging economies, and global cities.
